Only recently added to the list of styles and techniques applied by Alex Diamond over the years, the wood carvings shows a strong influence of Japanese wood cuts of the likes of Hokusai and Hiroshige.
In this work, Alex Diamond transfers several aspects of the famous popular Japanese art of the 18th and 19th century into a modern, urban context: repetition of the same themes and subjects; simplification of perspective, nature and architecture; use of patterns and reduced color schemes; demonic characters.

The traditional, elaborate, technically challenging and time-consuming craft of carving into painted wood with tiny blades, is accompanied by modern means of urban expression.
