Introducing today: Ricardo Cavolo, Ray Geary and Nyugen Smith - three of the artists taking part in our upcoming exhibition GEORGE HEARTS MARIA, opening September 1st.

Ricardo Cavolo

A freelance illustrator rather than a street artist, Madrid’s RICARDO CAVOLO — born in 1982 in Salamanca, Spain — specializes in an endearingly simple, though hardly naïve, drawing style that doesn’t shy away from dramatic colours. Whether he’s illustrating a Charles Dickens children’s book, designing record sleeves for the Gran Derby label or paying tribute to Russian tattoos on T-shirts for Phucisme, CAVOLO crafts images that recall classic comic books, advertising art and, more than anything, lively folk art from across the globe.

Eigentlich ist Ricardo Cavolo mehr freiberuflicher Illustrator als Street Art-Künstler. 1982 in Salamanca in Spanien geboren, richtet er seine Aufmerksamkeit auf einen reizend einfachen, dennoch kaum naiven Zeichenstil. Seine dramatisch gefärbten Werke rufen klassische Comichefte, Werbegrafik und vor allem lebhafte Volkskunst aus der ganzen Welt ins Bewusstsein des Betrachters zurück. Der junge Künstler entwarf Bilder für ein Kinderbuch von Charles Dickens, designt Plattencover für das Gran Derby-Label und verschönert T-Shirts von Phucisme mit Grafiken im Stil vom russischen Tattoos.

Ray Geary

Ray Geary: USA - Pills, Mixed Media with Steel Frames, 61 x 41cm, 2011Born May 24th, 1983, Ray Geary showed no interest in art at an early age. A graduate of the University of Vermont with a degree in Marketing he had no business engaging in the art world. He started collecting what he loved and eventually was drawn into making what he wanted to see. He explores themes such as The Workforce, Substance Abuse, Military Power, and the relationship between Love and Hate!He uses mostly metals and resin for his sculptures but loves incorporating various materials to get his point across!

Als Ray Geary noch jünger war, interessierte er sich noch nicht für Kunst. Als Absolvent des Marketing-Studiums an der University of Vermont hatte der 29-jährige mit Kunst nichts am Hut. Aber er begann das zu sammeln, was er liebte und kreierte schließlich auch das, was er sehen wollte. Er widmet sich Themen wie der Arbeiterschaft, Drogenmissbrauch, der Macht des Militärs und der Beziehung zwischen Liebe und Hass. Meistens benutzt er Metal und Harz für seine Skulpturen; um seine Aussage auf den Punkt zu bringen, scheut er sich jedoch nicht andere Materialien hinzuzufügen.

Nyugen Smith

Drawing heavily on his West Indian heritage, Nyugen Smith is interested in raising consciousness of past and present political struggles through his work which consists of sculpture, installation, video and performance. Growing up in Trinidad, Smith was profoundly influenced by the conflation of African cultural practices and the residue of British colonial rule encountered in his daily life on the island. Responding to this unique cultural environment,

Smith’s art is a reaction to imperialist practices of oppression, violence and ideological misnomers. His performance and video pieces enable him to claim an authentic voice in challenge to historical inaccuracies, while exposing to audiences the concealed narratives that distort reality and evade truth. These investigations enable Smith to re-visit and question individual identity as well as past and present social orders.

Ein Bewusstsein will er erschaffen, für die gegenwärtigen und vergangenen politischen Missstände, die er selbst erleben musste: Nyugen Smith ist in Trinidad und mit einer Mischung aus afrikanischer Kultur und den Überbleibseln der britischen Kolonialmacht aufgewachsen. Wenn er Arbeiten entwirft, seien es Skulpturen, Installationen, Videos oder Performances, fließt seine Herkunft von den Westindischen Inseln in den Prozess mit ein.

Seine Werke sind die Antwort auf Unterdrückung und Gewalt durch imperialistische Methoden. Seine Performances und Videos ermöglichen es Smith als authentischen Beobachter geschichtliche Ungenauigkeit anzuzweifeln und sein Publikum über die verfälschte Realität und die Wahrheit zu informieren. Diese Herangehensweise nutzt er um die Identität jedes einzelnen und der zurückliegenden und jetzigen sozialen Ordnung zu überdenken und zu hinterfragen.
