George hearts Maria: Artist profiles, part II

In the second part of the introduction of the artists exhibiting in GEORGE HEARTS MARIA, our upcoming exhibition opening September 1st, we briefly present Ian Kuali'i and Turf 1.

"Destroing to create" could Ian Kuali’i call his way to do art. The artist forms freehanded sophisticated images with sharp tools. Often the arising figures are mythological and spiritual. These cut-outs are mounted on found items as wooden panels or old street posters. He calls California, Hawaii and by now New York his homes, in September we offer his artworks at least temporary a place to stay.

Für seine Kunst zerstört Ian Kuali’i, um neues zu erschaffen. Denn mit spitzen Werkzeugen ritzt er freihand in Papier und lässt filigrane Figuren entstehen. Diese haben meist einen mythologischen und spirituellen Hintergrund. Seine „cut outs“ sind auf verschiedenen gefundenen Untergünden, wie hölzerne Panele oder alte Plakate, befestigt. Ian Kuali’i nennt zur Zeit Kalifornien, Hawaii und New York sein zuhause, im September dürfen wir nun seine Kunst bei uns Willkommen heißen.

Jean Labourdette aka Turf 1

Turf 1: Gold Skull, Acrylic & Engraving wood, 60 x 37cm, 2006The artist Jean Labourdette aka Turf 1 was born in Paris and grew up amidst the French graffiti scene. Nowadays he concentrates on paintings and sculptures in order to provide his characters with more reality. In general his artwork can be described as a struggle with his own special interpretation of reality. That is why he frees many of his paintings from two dimensional boundaries and gets them into contact with their actual real surrounding. Another characteristic element of Turf's art are the vintage cabinets which are used as frames.

Geboren in Paris, aufgewachsen als Teil der dortigen Graffitiszene und nun ein Künstler mit einer eigenen Interpretation des Realen: der Werdegang von Jean Labourdette aka Turf 1 ist facettenreich. Im Mittelpunkt seiner Werke steht die Auseinandersetzung mit der Wirklichkeit. Er durchbricht die Grenzen der Zweidimensionalität und lässt seine Bilder und Skulpturen in Interaktion mit dem tatsächlichen Raum treten. Ein charakteristisches Merkmal sind die alten Wandschränkchen, die seine Arbeiten oftmals einrahmen.
