NINA BRAUN

Considering that we are living in a digital era prevailed by economical aspects of operations, and influenced by the reproducibility of images and ideas, Nina Braun’s approach to work is quite extraordinary. Obsessed by materials like wool and fabric, she creates fantastic, almost playful sculptures and objects easily perceived and understood by the viewer as such. On the one hand, the artist intends to evoke imagery from our childhood, on the other hand she targets the aesthetics of comic heroes and pop culture. In this respect, the art of Nina Braun is accessible and abstract at the same time. While material, shapes and quotations are recognizable, the rather unconventional combination of object and imagery creates a unique momentum entangling the viewer. The art of Nina Braun is not bond to fabric alone. Times to times, her characters wander through different media, and thus are constantly subject to metamorphosis: Starting off as drawings, they evolve into objects and sculptures, until they finally come to life in stop trick animations. heliumcowboy artspace is working with Nina Braun since 2005 presenting her art in solo and group shows as well as on fairs. In 2010/2011 the artist will participate at the Fountainhead residency programme Miami, USA.

Lately, Nina has been producing stop-motion-animated short films as well. Going to work with the same devotion to the tiniest detail as in her objects, during her latest film “Business as usual” a diminutive hut is literally carved out from a skyscraper. All hand crafted. All filmed frame-by-frame. Probably one of the most time-consuming artist short films we have seen. And also one of the best. Ever.
